In 1990, organized homeless men, women and children took over empty government -owned properties in eight cities across America in a simultaneous and coordinated protest. This painting depicts Ron Casanova, a homeless leader who lived in Tompkins Square Park in New York City, breaking a lock on a vacant building owned by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). “I don’t care if it’s against the law,” he said. “I am dying in the streets.  That should be against the law.”
